Communications solutions provider Comcast Business, a unit of Comcast Cable, announced new mobile capabilities for Business VoiceEdge, the company’s cloud-based private branch exchange (PBX) solution for small and medium-size businesses (SMBs) that extends its unified communications (UC) and video calling features to Google Android and Apple iOS devices.

Available as a free download for those operating systems, the mobile app provides a user-friendly interface to manage business voicemail and features that allow business calls to be answered from virtually anywhere. Business VoiceEdge is delivered over Comcast’s network, which is available across 39 states, and the mobility features of the platform are designed to help increase a worker’s ability to communicate, collaborate, innovate and deliver better customer service while on the road or out of the office.

“We had been dealing with basic telecommunications products for years. When we got serious and looked at the features, functions, and benefits of Business VoiceEdge, it was an easy choice,” said Jordi Tejero, owner of CRS Technology Consultants, a Florida-based IT consulting firm. “We are saving money over what we were previously paying for our old phone system, and now we have a completely cloud-based solution that gives our team full freedom to work from wherever they need to.”

Video calling capability enables point-to-point, HD-quality video calls for Business VoiceEdge phones with a built-in camera, or built-in or external cameras used in conjunction with the Business VoiceEdge softphone. Customers can also add video during a phone call by pressing a button. Business VoiceEdge can be installed at an employee’s home office, providing the same voice capabilities at home that they have in the office.

The softphone application, available for PC or Mac, allows users to make and receive phone calls directly from their computer using their business phone number. When used in conjunction with a video camera, it also enables video calling.

“As organizations continue to integrate cloud computing and bring your own device (BYOD) into the work place, there is an increasing need for mobile solutions that will deliver unified communications across today’s agile workforce,” Diane Myers, principal analyst for VoIP, UC and IMS at Infonetics Research, said in a statement. “Implementing a mobile work environment will enable today’s distributed workforce to communicate, collaborate and deliver better customer service, and in turn provide organizations with increased productivity, reduced costs and an improved business processes.”

Business VoiceEdge is part of the Comcast Business suite of voice solutions, including Business Voice, a voice line service designed for small businesses, and PRI Trunks, a trunking phone service for larger organizations that works with existing PBX equipment.

“Our new Business VoiceEdge mobility capabilities give workers seamless voice and unified communications that are tightly integrated with both their corporate offices and their preferred mobile devices,” John Guillaume, vice president of product management at Comcast Business, said in a statement. “These capabilities allow employees to improve their communications and productivity while at the office, on the road or working remotely.”
