Business recovery solutions specialist Unitrends unveiled the next generation of its purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs), which feature tiered flash storage capabilities.

The Recovery-Series product line now includes appliances for any organization, from small- to medium- size businesses (SMBs) and remote or branch offices to the largest enterprises.

New units include three lower-cost physical appliances for small businesses and two 3U form factor appliances, along with a 4U model for enterprises with high-volume storage needs.

For small organizations, Unitrends is offering the Recovery-201 desktop appliance, which is priced at approximately $1,200. The Recovery-602 and 603 1U half-height rack appliances start at about $4,000.

“PBBAs provide the best total cost of ownership for customers, as all software, hardware and support needed is included for a single price,” Subo Guha, vice president of product management at Unitrends, told eWEEK.“Our Recovery-Series appliances, 1U and above, also include flash storage, which drives improved backup performance, faster restore and disaster recovery processes, and greater scalability and flexibility.” You don’t typically find flash storage in appliances priced for small businesses. Our low-end PBBAs are perfect for budget conscious buyers that want to focus on managing their business rather than their backup.”

Companies with large storage requirements can choose from two new 3U appliances, which include raw storage ranging from 37 TB to 97 TB.

Tiered flash storage delivers improved backup performance, faster restore and disaster recovery processes, and greater scalability and flexibility.

Customers also have the ability to implement policies around flash cache usage to optimize performance as data grows and to prevent performance degradation, even as appliances age.

Unitrends has made a number of product enhancements to improve performance, including upgrades to the hardware’s central processing unit (CPU), advancements in its memory and RAID, and improvements in compression capabilities.

“Data is growing at an exponential rate and data center infrastructures are becoming increasingly complex. At the same time, data loss is becoming more and more of a reality – it’s no longer a question of if but when,” Guha said. “As such, backup and disaster recovery are more important today than ever before. Without data protection, businesses face serious data loss risks that could result in downtime and negatively impact revenue and corporate reputation.”

The Recovery-Series appliances are available now and can be purchased directly from Unitrends or through the channel.

For a limited time, customers can save up to 20 percent on select 2015 Recovery-Series appliances and obtain free hardware refreshes for life, the company said..

Additionally, Unitrends is looking to make hybrid cloud adoption more affordable by offering its No Limits Cloud replication service to Recovery-Series customers.

The replication service, along with the company’s Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) offering, comprise the Unitrends Cloud, which is augmented with Recovery Assurance for vSphere and Hyper-V environments.
