Data protection and disaster recovery specialist Unitrends announced the availability of Unitrends Virtual Backup (UVB) 8.0, a virtual appliance providing hypervisor-level protection for VMware, Microsoft and Citrix.

Formerly known as PHD Virtual Backup, the solution, available through direct sales as well as channel partners, starts at $625 for two sockets, and the product is also offered as part of the Unitrends Certified Recovery Suite.

The recovery suite is a bundled software package that lets organizations select the solutions set for their specific physical and virtual backup, archiving and disaster recovery needs at one price.

The release introduces a new Web-based user interface (UI) as well as the company’s Intelligent Optimization, built-in intelligence based on industry best practices that automatically optimizes steps in the backup and recovery process, from expediting installation and daily backup management to full site recovery.

“The interface is vastly superior to anything else on the market we tested. It’s smooth and seamless and gives you instant visibility into the virtual machine protection status of your environment, but also lets you drill down for more detail,” Darren Boeck, IT manager for Mcneilus Steel, said in a statement. “Creating ad hoc backups is a requirement in our environment and Unitrends Virtual Backup makes it simple. Backup performance is rock solid, and in our tests, Unitrends recovered virtual machines twice as fast as Veeam.”

In addition, UVB 8.0 offers more than 140 enhancements that provide boosts to backup, archiving and replication performance, including up to eight times faster offsite backups.

Featuring Hyper-V backup capabilities, UVB 8.0 performs backups 50 times faster than the free edition, the company said.

“Virtual Backup 8.0 helps small to mid-sized enterprises easily and affordably overcome the hurdles of protecting increasingly complex virtual environments,” Joe Noonan, senior product manager at Unitrends, said in a statement. “This release is yet another key deliverable in our overall strategy to provide organizations with flexible, agile solutions that extend well beyond data backup to applications, systems and infrastructure. We are 100 percent focused on the real end-game for our customers—recovery and business continuity.”

Last month, the company launched its hybrid cloud Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) offering, which utilizes the company’s ReliableDR, Enterprise Backup and Unitrends Bridge technologies.

The DRaaS offering includes annual or monthly subscription rates, on-premise appliances ranging from 1 terabyte (TB) to 97TB, or software virtual appliance options for fast instant recovery of physical and virtual machines, the company’s archiving hardware and software capabilities and installation and cloud seeding services.
