Actuate Corp. on Monday announced an upgrade to its e.Spreadsheet product, designed to make the Web-based reporting tool easier to use for non-technical users.

New e.Spreadsheet Designer development tools ease the report building process. Reports are in Microsoft Excel format and can be published inside and outside the firewall.

Also in this version, e.Spreadsheet Designer features a Range Editor for designing spreadsheet reports. Report developers can toggle between data sheet and design views to create formatted Excel reports that change as new data is retrieved. The data is saved as an editable XSL style sheet.

Also new is Query Wizard, a point-and-click wizard that allows users to define data sources and create queries without writing any code.

Lastly, the new Query Design Editor connects data sources, allowing users to design and modify queries without any knowledge of SQL, company officials, in San Francisco, Calif., said. Output can be saved as a standard SQL query for future use.

The update is expected to be available in the first quarter of next year.
