CommVault Boosts Backup and Snapshot Features

Data management software maker CommVault announced an advance in its data recovery management software June 12 with the availability of new features for the QiNetix 6.1 Unified Data Management suite.

This new feature set, called RecoveryDirector 6.1, combines the functionality of the Oceanport, N.J.-based companys QuickRecovery and Galaxy Backup and Recovery software products.

The new product is aimed at helping storage administrators better manage snapshot and backup data across protection, recovery and archive tiers, a company spokesman said.

Using RecoveryDirector, enterprises with SANs “will be able to increase the business value of tiered storage by creating online recovery images that extend traditional backup methods and expand data protection capabilities,” said CommVault marketing manager Kelly Polanski.

These data snapshots —which can be taken as frequently as the user wants—make it much faster to restore a downed or virus-infected system, Polanski said.

“The object-level recovery [within RecoveryDirector] also makes unnecessary to know the time and date of a piece of data in order to search for it,” Polanski said.

RecoveryDirector enables storage administrators to recover data from multiple recovery points, reduce or eliminate backup windows, and improve RTO/RPO service levels, she added.

The new feature set adds sequencing, workflow and policy management into a single, logical workflow and one-step recovery process, Polanski said.

With this capability, users can manage concurrent multiple point-in-time snapshots and backup sets, improve resource utilization, and eliminate duplicate operations, she said.

For enterprises seeking to simplify use of device-embedded snapshot capabilities, RecoveryDirector manages a wide variety of snapshot technologies, including those offered by Data Domain, Dell, EMC, HDS, HP, NetApp and Xiotech.

RecoveryDirector works with SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange and Oracle applications, and with a long list of file systems.
