Organizations that use both Microsofts SharePoint Services and CommVault Systems Galaxy backup and recovery software now will be able to more easily and quickly back up and restore files while improving performance and reporting.

A new version of Galaxy enables users to more easily recover individual documents in Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 environments, according to CommVault Systems, of Oceanport, N.J. Faster recovery of individual documents can improve access to collaborative information, increase productivity and lower costs, company officials said.

While SharePoint Services allows organizations to create, manage and build their own collaborative Web sites and share files more easily, Galaxy adds to those capabilities by protecting and recovering SharePoint data at a more granular level.

For companies that rely heavily on SharePoint Services, the Galaxys new functionality can make a big difference, said Dianne McAdam, senior analyst at Data Mobility Group, of Nashua, N.H.

“If customers use SharePoint services to share documents and one user inadvertently deletes a document, then CommVault Galaxy can be used to retrieve the individual file,” McAdam said.

Faster recovery of individual documents is particularly useful for companies that can deliver products faster by sharing and collaborating on documents, she added.

Broadcast Australia, an independent broadcast transmission provider based in Sydney, has been a Galaxy user for two years in addition to using both SharePoint 2000 and 2003.

Bob Maslin, IT operations manager at Broadcast Australia, said that by allowing him to backup and recover individual documents, SharePoint—already a good document management solution—becomes even better.

“Without CommVault, a SharePoint document restore may take a day since it requires me to restore a whole database to a different server, extract the documents I need, and then input them back to the SharePoint Server,” he said. “With CommVault, I use their browser GUI to select the documents and CommVault puts them back into SharePoint either at the same location or another selected location with or without the original permissions. And because we are a small to medium-sized business, any product that gives us such a large savings in time is good for our business.”
