Dual-layer DVD burners from Sony Electronics, which effectively double the amount of data that can be stored on a single disk, will hit the market near the end of next month.
Currently, consumer- and business-class DVD burners can store 4.7GB of data on a single disk, but the introduction of dual-layer technology will raise the maximum single-disk capacity to 8.5GB.
With the higher data capacities, I predict well see dual-layer DVD recorders used more for backing up small servers, workstations and laptops.
The Sony DRU-700A Dual Layer Internal Drive will list for $230; the external version will be priced at $330.
