EMC has added upgraded replication support in the 5.5 version of its Data Protection Advisor software, which became generally available Dec. 14.
Using the new version of the storage management suite, IT managers now can automate and remotely monitor all of their backup applications along with replication technologies in both physical and virtual environments, EMC marketing executive Ken MacDonald told eWEEK.
“With this upgrade, IT managers now have a single, unified solution that monitors, analyzes and reports across backup, replication and NAS infrastructure,” MacDonald said.
“This also will tell you whether you have a recoverable replica [of the state of an application or operating system] before a disaster happens.”
Data Protection Advisor 5.5 is optimized for use on EMC’s Symmetrix and Clariion arrays. It is not designed for use in other storage systems.
Specifically, Data Protection Advisor creates a unified graphical map of application clients, arrays, devices and replicas on Symmetrix and CLARiiON storage arrays that identifies what is working and where replication gaps exist, MacDonald said. Easy-to-follow wizards discover the application structure and all the associated storage, devices and replicas, he said.
Through automated data gathering and analysis, Data Protection Advisor captures changes in the recoverability from any replicas, MacDonald said. This new support allows for new levels of insight, leading to improved service level compliance and recoverability of business critical data, he said.
DPA 5.5 also includes new support for EMC’s RecoverPoint Network-Based Replication. Customers can now use Data Protection Advisor to simplify RecoverPoint monitoring and service level compliance.
Data Protection Advisor 5.5 is available immediately from EMC and its Velocity2 and authorized partners. For more information, go here.
