Data storage systems vendor Hitachi Data Systems said Feb. 5 it will announce its intention to acquire privately held online storage management software maker Archivas in a press conference on Feb. 6.

Details of the transaction were not released. This will be Hitachis first acquisition in the online archiving market.

Jack Domme, executive vice president of global solutions strategy and development at Hitachi Data Systems in Santa Clara, Calif., and Gary Voight, CEO of Archivas, will make the announcement in a conference call/Webcast, a Hitachi spokesperson said.

Archivas, founded in 2003 and based in Waltham, Mass., makes digital archiving software that enables customers to store and manage fixed-content data—such as document, e-mail, database, image, and audio files—in a secure online environment, a company spokesperson said.

Hitachi and Archivas have been partners for a few years.

Hitachis Content Archiver, powered by Archivas, is a component which provides business intelligence, policy-based control, authentication and protection of the Hitachi Content Archive Platform. The software runs on a pre-configured operating system which, in turn, runs on industry standard servers, a Hitachi spokesperson said.

In order to meet corporate governance, legal discovery and compliance regulations, Archivas Cluster addresses the needs for immediate online access to archive data at a lower total cost of ownership, the spokesperson said.
