The annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas isn’t particularly known for news of innovation in the data storage sector, but there were a few announcements made Jan. 7. They are as follows:

SanDisk announced that the 64GB SanDisk pSSDTM Gen2 has been selected by LG Electronics as the solid-state drive for its new ultra-thin mobile PC.

The ultra-thin, compact mobile PC features 3G broadband connectivity. It weighs 970 grams and sports an 11.6-inch LCD screen, 3.5 hours of battery life, a Webcam and multiple connectivity options (USB, BT WLAN).
The Gen2 is equipped with a Menlow platform to minimize power consumption and runs Windows 7. The SanDisk pSSD drive has an industry-standard 1.8-inch form factor with a micro-SATA interface.

Imation announced it has signed an agreement with MXI Security to develop and manufacture a line of highly secure data storage devices.

The companies will incorporate MXI Security for user authentication, digital identity and data encryption, including MXI’s patent-pending Bluefly Processor technology, into a line of new Imation-branded storage devices.
Imation expects to launch the first of these new highly secure devices, including USB flash drives and external hard disk drives, through its global distribution channels by the end of first quarter of 2010.

Samsung announced the G Series, its new lineup of external hard drives, which are designed under an eco-friendly green concept. The G series will augment Samsung’s existing external drive portfolio of 1.8-inch, 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives.

The G-Series includes the 2.5-inch G2 Portable with 250/320/500/640GB densities, and the 3.5-inch G3 Station, available in 1/1.5/2TB versions.
The G-Series eco-friendly drives are halogen-free, featuring low noise levels and low power consumption.
Smart power management enables the G3 Station to be turned on and off by a host computer. The G3 Station reduces power consumption by more than 95 percent-from the conventional level of 2.5W to 0.09W. It automatically enters standby mode after 5 minutes of inactivity.
In addition, the new drives utilize a USB 2.0 interface with data transfer speeds of 480M bps. Key features include Samsung Auto Backup for ongoing data preservation, SecretZone software for personal data encryption and SafetyKey for password protection.
The G Series drives will be available globally by mid-January 2010.
