Next time you schedule a long flight somewhere and you want to take along some favorite movies or binge set of television shows, know that there’s an alternative method of storing them without infringing upon your laptop’s precious storage.
You can load up a lot of content onto a small, light but very capacious new personal drive that can be slipped into a shirt pocket or a small zip pocket on your backpack if necessary.
We’re describing the new Samsung Portable T5 1TB External solid-state disk (SSD), which can hold a whole slew of movies, photos and documents in a form factor that is about the size of two packs of gum placed side by side. It’s so small and light that I worry a little about how easy it would be to lose, so that’s one thing to consider.
With most movies taking up anywhere from 4GB to 8GB of storage on average, do the math; you can place a lot of movies on this little device.
Samsung has made its T-series a very successful one, starting with the T1 two years ago and progressing to the T5 here in fall 2017. Each USB version has offered a little more speed and more capacity. Naturally, the T5 is the fastest of them all so far, with the implementation of USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps).
That is, until the T6 shows up someday. In the meantime, this one is the crown jewel of the Samsung T-series franchise.
You know, there’s just not a lot more to say about the T5, because it does one thing, and one thing only: It takes in files quickly and stores them for you reliably. That’s pretty much all you need to know.
The 1TB drives (black in color) are little expensive at about $400, but weigh that initial cost against the convenience and backup storage capacity you get, and it could be well worth it. A 500GB version (blue in color) is available for about $200 (pictured). You can find them on Amazon, Google Express, Best Buy, Jet.com, Newegg.com and B&H Photo, among others.
