DBAssociates is rolling out an easier way to back up Microsoft Corp. SQL Server databases.

The news comes from Edgewood Solutions LLC, a Merrimack, N.H., consultancy and partner of DBAssociates, which is based in Melbourne, Australia.

The software tool, SQL LiteSpeed, compresses and locks down data with 128-bit encryption as the data backs up. Edgewood officials said that such encryption protects the backup for off-site storage and also satisfies impending regulatory requirements for protecting personally identifiable data for legislation such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and SAS (Statement on Auditing Standards) 70.

Because of compression, the product can cut storage costs by up to 95 percent, Edgewood officials said, as well as up to 75 percent in aggregate storage costs for disk and tape media.

The upgrade of SQL LiteSpeed, for which DBAssociates has not yet designated a version number, features a GUI aimed at assisting DBAs (database administrators) in managing backups from a single desktop. It also maintains extended stored procedures and command-line interfaces for organizations that use such capabilities.

Robert Lardizabal, a DBA for a Columbia, Md., company that services the credit-counseling industry, which he declined to name, has been using the version prior to the current update to back up some 12 production SQL Server instances. Lardizabal said SQL LiteSpeed reduces the amount of time and resources that it would normally take to do a backup by “an order of magnitude.”

The GUI doesnt appeal, however. Lardizabal said that his enterprise has no need for such an interface, since the extended store procedures the product already provides are a better fit for his needs. “It mimics the command structure of the native backup and restore” procedures, he noted.

SQL LiteSpeed is priced per CPU, starting at $345. Encryption capabilities are offered as a flat rate per server. The product will be available in late May.
