It’s rare that a new file system of any type becomes available to the enterprise IT market. This is because so many enterprises have long been standardized on older, well-trampled file systems—even if they long predate the servers, storage and networking they handle.
However, the time has come for a new-gen file system engineered specifically for unstructured file and object-based data, wherever it resides in a system. A new player in the business, Stellus Technologies of San Jose, Calif. is the innovator here.

Stellus, which has been in stealth mode since 2016, this week announced the launch of its Stellus Data Platform, based on the industry’s first Key-Value over Fabrics technology. Using this, the company claims it can efficiently accelerate by 10X the storing and accessing of the world’s unstructured data. In fact, Stellus describes itself as “the world’s fastest flash storage.”
That, friends, is a rather strong statement, because flash storage is already pretty darn fast, compared to hard disk drives.
Extremely High Read/Write Performance
Stellus claims that its data platform provides extremely high read/write performance for file and object-based data, which is necessary for increasing numbers of data-intensive workloads and applications such as cognitive AI, machine learning, high-speed microscopy, genomic sequencing, and data streaming applications.
“We’ve already have done four or five dozen installs (since the beta program started last September),” CRO and founder Ken Grohe told eWEEK. “You can think of our platform this way: We’ve made it so decoupled, so it’s easy to upgrade. It’s equivalent to a young man buying a two-seater car, then realizing later he wants more horsepower, so he goes from a four-cylinder to an eight-cylinder vehicle. When you do that with us, you don’t have to change the car, you just buy the (extra) ‘cylinders.’ You don’t lose money on the training and the new product, you just put it (the platform) into place.”
The Stellus Data Platform is a software-as-a-service-based data system that uses cloud, core and edge computing infrastructures to enable hyperscale throughput for digital enterprises. Key-Value over Fabrics technology can make unstructured data access faster and more resource efficient than other data storage architectures available today, Grohe said. This innovation allows businesses to capture, store and process increasingly large data sets from an increasing number of data sources, which is critical to power new parallel data analysis workloads.
What a Key Industry Analyst Said
Storage market analysis firm ESG conducted a technical evaluation to validate the consistent performance of the scale-through architecture, which can be found here (video and whitepaper).
“Stellus gives companies a choice of throughput or capacity or both, all within the same key-value-based platform,” Steve Duplessie, ESG Founder and Senior Analyst, said in a media advisory. “It’s no longer about choosing to scale up or scale out. Stellus’s ‘Scale-Through’ technology provides digital enterprises with a clear and unprecedented path to efficiently and effectively manage unstructured data at massive throughput and scale.
“Stellus brings hyperscale capabilities to every digital enterprise, eliminating the requirement to compromise.”
