Taipei, TAIWAN—During a discussion at the Computex show here, Xtore Extreme Storage General Manager Dennis Lin said that the companys network-attached storage products have far outsold its direct-attached storage and storage area network solutions so far this year as NAS popularity has taken off.
The companys NAS offerings come in 1U, 2U and tower implementations and offer a choice of two operating systems: Windows 2003 Server and an embedded version of Free BSD. The Windows 2003 Server version of Xtores NAS products is highly configurable and scales quite well, said Lin. He noted that the embedded Free BSD products dont scale well because the driver support for the newest hard drives and controllers always lags behind those approved for Microsofts product.

Xtores 1U and tower NAS products with the newest 250GB SATA (Serial ATA) hard drives are scalable up to 1 terabyte of space. The 1U products currently incorporate the newest SATA II drives. Its 2U offerings sport SCSI or SATA capabilities and scale to 3 terabytes, said Lin.
All of the companys storage solutions currently use 3Wares SATA 9500S products and come initially equipped with Western Digital 250GB SATA hard drives, said Lin.
Lin said that the company has been toying with the idea of offering a Linux-based solution as well, but that they are facing many of the scalability issues associated with the Free BSD products. He gave no timetable for when a Linux offering would become available.
Xtore Extreme Storage is based in City of Industry, Calif., but the companys design, development and manufacturing facilities are located in Taiwan.
