      Promise Introduces Hot-Swap Serial ATA Drive Enclosure

      Promise Technology Inc. recently announced the availability of its SuperSwap 1100, a drive enclosure for Serial ATA (SATA)/150 drives. Along with the FastTrak SATA RAID adapter, the combination of the enclosures hot-swap capability with RAID levels 1, 5 and 0+1 provides customers with high-availability that is ideal for use in small server applications, the company said. By combining drives, SuperSwap 1100 drive enclosures and a Promise FastTrak SATA RAID controller, users can easily replace a failed hard drive while the system continues to operate.

      NetCell Unveils 64-Bit Multi-Disk RAID Technology

      NetCell Corp. recently announced single-chip 64-bit multi-disk storage acceleration technology for a new type of RAID system that will enable direct striping of 64-bit data directly onto the disk array. SyncRAID technology doubles the performance of traditional enterprise-class RAID systems by eliminating the read-modify-write bottleneck traditionally required in RAID high-reliability mode. It also enables plug-and-play installation so users can create fast disk arrays using off-the-shelf drives.

      Dot Hill Upgrades SAN Management Software

      Storage software vendor Dot Hill Systems Corp. recently upgraded a pair of its storage area network (SAN) products with new features to better integrate with and complement the companys SANnet II family of storage management packages. The company expanded SANscape 3.0 into a suite, providing an a new management console that boasts improved integration with enterprise-wide network management software, such as Hewlett-Packard Co.s OpenView; and the new SANscape Alert, which notifies administrators via phone, e-mail, fax or pager when predetermined events require intervention. Dot Hill also updated SANpath 4.0 to support larger SANs and provide for rapid server booting.

      Consumer Electronics Devices to Drive Demand for Storage

      With more than 30 million households already surfing at high-speed—and more than 130 million expected by the end of 2007—Internet users are viewing high-quality streaming video content. And many will be willing to pay for it, according to research firm In-Stat/MDR. With many content-loving consumers craving stored streaming video, hard drive storage is emerging as the method of choice over other formats, according to research group In-Stat/MDR. The company predicts that consumer electronics with integrated hard drives will represent about 7 percent of the total hard drive market, which is nearly double that of 2002. Looking forward, the research firm expects the market to grow from 9.3 million units in 2002 to about 16.7 million units this year, at a compound annual growth rate of 56.7 percent over the 2002-2007 period.
