      Hitachi Data Aims High for SMB, Compliance

      Hitachi Data Systems this week added to its storage system family a new modular product for small-and medium-sized businesses that it called more powerful and flexible than comparable products. The Thunder 9580V improves application performance and aims to help customers use multi-tiered storage in combination with the Hitachi Lightning 9900V Series, and large-scale consolidation of older mid-range JBOD storage. The Santa Clara, Calif-based division of Hitachi also unveiled new business continuity software for the high-end HDS Lightning 9900V, and added compliance features to the mix.

      Veritas Crafts SRM Software for Windows

      Veritas Software Corp. this week continued its sweeping integration of the technology assets of Precise Software with the release of software designed to manage the storage resources of Microsoft Windows systems more easily. The newly released StorageCentral 5.2 contains quota- and file-management capabilities to support Windows Server 2003 and the new Windows Storage Server 2003. It aims to free up disk space by making sure that only business-oriented files are being stored on corporate networks..

      Emulex to Buy Vixel

      Officials of Emulex Corp., a Costa Mesa, Calif.-based developer of storage networking host bus adapters, this week said the company will acquire Bothell, Wash.-based Vixel Corp., which supplies embedded switch ASICs and subsystems to storage networking OEMs. Vixel represents a $450 million market for embedded storage switches by 2007, which is in addition to the $1.4 million to $1.5 million market expected for storage host bus adapters by then, said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing for Emulex. Emulex will pay about $310 million for the company. Subject to regulatory approvals and the will of the holders of a majority of Vixel shares, the deal is expected to close in November.

      Fremont to See Maxtor Expansion

      Silicon Valley high-tech manufacturing might appear inexorably bound for China, India and other Asian countries. But a Milpitas maker of hard disk drives is challenging common wisdom and expanding its production to Fremont. MMC Technology, a wholly owned subsidiary of Milpitas Maxtor Corp., is increasing its disk-drive “media” manufacturing from a 140,000-square-foot building in San Jose to a second site in Fremont with 183,000 square feet. That includes 65,000 square feet of clean rooms, where the bulk of the manufacturing will take place.
