The annual fall Intel Developers Forum in San Jose, Calif., drew its share of enterprise storage vendors, showing new designs and support for upcoming industry standards. The announcements covered a wide range of technologies, from storage management wares to storage controller technology. And then there are the many host bus adapters.

Here are a selection of announcments from the conference and expo:

      SATA and SAS

LSI Logic to Showcase Advanced I/O Performance Features in Serial Attached SCSI Demo

LSI Logic will demonstrate advanced I/O performance features and Serial Attached SCSI interoperability. The demonstrations will connect an LSI Logic SAS controller prototype to an LSI Logic SAS expander prototype. SAS prototype drives from Maxtor and Seagate are in turn connected to the SAS expander prototype. Using full Serial Attached SCSI Protocol (SSP), the SAS controller prototype executes SCSI write and SCSI read commands, with data comparison, across the interface. Performance features, out-of-band communication, speed negotiation and disconnecting I/Os, will be shown. A SAS analyzer is connected in line to show the traffic being generated at 1.5Gbit/s.

Maxtor, Silicon Image and Comax to Demonstrate Serial ATA External Storage Device

The companies joined together to demonstrate the first external storage Serial ATA (SATA) device based on an early draft of the Serial ATA II Cables and Connectors Volume 2 specification being developed by the SATA II Working Group. The external storage prototype is a sample of next-generation SATA technology designed to meet the growing demand for faster external hard drive connections. The demonstration includes video playback from an external storage device for entertainment PCs. External storage devices are also well suited for gaming PCs and notebooks, or to expand storage for graphic artists and media creators.

DataCore Announces Native iSCSI Support; SANsymphony Adds Inexpensive LAN Option for Accessing Heterogeneous Storage Pools

DataCore Software this week announced that it will release native iSCSI support for its SANsymphony software in Q4 2003. The new capabilities allow any iSCSI-compliant host to access a broad range of centrally managed storage resources as if they were local disks over the Ethernet LAN connection. The storage devices need not be iSCSI-equipped, since SANsymphony handles the protocol translation from iSCSI Ethernet connections to the particular disk drive interface (parallel SCSI, Fibre Channel, EIDE, SATA, etc.). DataCore employs Intel architecture-based Storage Domain Servers to consolidate and automate the management of these heterogeneous storage devices, at the same time enhancing the functionality and performance of those subsystems.
