Macintosh users have much to cheer about this week, with two storage products announcing compatibility with the Apple platform. In other news, FileNet offers a new enterprise content management service, and AppIQs SAN/SRM solution adds capabilities.

      • Mac Users Gain Choices with More Storage Compatibility

Toronto-based Asigra Inc. has announced that its Televaulting agentless distributed backup and recovery software now works on the Mac OS X platform. In addition, Televaulting for Mac OS X supports systems running Windows, Novell NetWare, Linux and Unix.

Maxtor Corp., of Milpitas, Calif., meanwhile, has introduced a hard drive with a FireWire 800 interface for the Mac market. The Maxtor OneTouch II, FireWire 800 Edition offers an 800M-bps data transfer rate with a 300GB capacity and a 16MB buffer, as well as a triple interface for universal connectivity.

      • FileNet P8 Stresses Information Lifecycle Management

FileNet Corp., of Costa Mesa, Calif., has introduced FileNet P8 Active Storage and Retrieval (ASAR) services, which allow users to manage content throughout the lifecycle, including migration to various data storage tiers and storage platforms.

FileNet P8 ECM (Enterprise Content Management), which works with leading storage vendors technologies, allows organizations to assign data to different storage tiers based on value, content, age, company policies and practices, and regulatory compliance.

FileNet P8 ASAR services consist of a storage policy object that allows data to be moved among rewritable and fixed content stores, while an event action step processor makes sure that data is moved automatically to a different storage tier when certain events specified by the user have been met.

      • Newest Version of SAN/SRM Tool Offers More Control over Diverse Infrastructures

The newest version of AppIQs Storage Authority, a SAN (storage area network) management and SRM (storage resource management) solution, offers a host of new modules designed to provide more centralized management of heterogeneous storage environments.

Version 4.0 now includes separate modules for NetApp, Veritas NetBackup and Microsoft SQL Server. StorageAuthority for NetApp provides centralized management of distributed NetApp filers by integrating with NetApps Data OnTap operating system. StorageAuthority Protection Manager for Veritas NetBackup adds integrated backup reporting, fault analysis and SAN correlation capabilities for Veritas NetBackup. Storage Authority for Microsoft SQL Server automatically discovers Microsoft SQL instances, databases, database files and tables, helping administrators predict the impact of planned and unplanned SAN downtime on SQL Server applications.

Additional features of the new release include managed storage system support for IBM TotalStorage ESS disk systems, managed host support for SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, management server support for Sun Solaris 10, and support for Microsoft Windows 2003 and Windows 2000 Dynamic Disk feature, EMC PowerPath 4.0 and Oracle implementations on Veritas Cluster.
