CommVault, of Oceanport, N.J., has introduced a new version of its QiNetix that increases its data management capabilities.
QiNetix 6.1 allows users to classify data according to its value and move it to the most appropriate tier of storage.
QiNetix 6.1 offers new data classification capabilities via the Data Classification Enabler, which allows users to copy, move, search and recover data based on its business value.
Other new features include four new DataMigrator platform agents, extended support for unstructured data, and expanded support for the latest releases of the Hitachi Data Retention Utility, Network Appliance SnapLock and EMC Centera.

- Promise Technology Introduces New Architecture for Servers and Storage Arrays
Promise Technology Inc., of Milpitas, Calif., has introduced a new RAID 6 double parity disk storage architecture that offers more redundancy for fault handling and better tolerance of simultaneous drive failures.
The companys SuperTrak line of 8-port, 3G bps SATA (Serial ATA) RAID controllers, which support RAID 6, provide hardware acceleration based on Intel IOP331 and IOP333 I/O processors with Intel Xscale technology.
The controllers also accommodate full open source Linux driver architecture; support for RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and JBOD; offer both automatic and manual rebuild of a hot spare drive; offer multiple logical drive and multiple LUN support; and allow for online array expansion.

- EMC Introduces Fabric Switch
EMC Corp., of Hopkinton, Mass., has announced a new fabric switch designed to help midsize companies more easily deploy and manage SANs (storage area networks).
The 20-port Connectrix MDS-9020 Fabric Switch, based on technology from Cisco Systems Inc., performs at 4G bps.
The product also provides non-disruptive software upgrades and built-in management features that can be accessed through a command line interface or through the integrated Cisco Fabric Manager software.
The Connectrix MDS-9020 starts at $10,800.

- Addonics Introduces SATA Port Multiplier
Addonics Technologies, of San Jose, Calif., has introduced a SATA (Serial ATA) port multiplier that allows multiple drives to be connected to a SATA controller via one eSATA port.
The $89 5×1 eSATA Port Multiplier, with 3G bps throughput, can combine up to five SATA hard drives or optical drives into one eSATA connection to more easily build disk enclosures using SATA drives.
The drives can be set up as individual drives, RAID or JBOD to function as one large hard drive.

- VMware Upgrades Workstation Software
VMware Inc., of Palo Alto, Calif., has announced a new release of its desktop virtualization software.
VMware Workstation 5.5 offers 64-bit guest support for AMD Athlon 64 processor-based systems as well as for systems using Intel Extended Memory 64 technology (EM64T) with Intel virtualization technology.
In addition, it supports two-way virtual SMP (symmetric multiprocessing), provides an enhanced virtual machine importer that allows users to convert Symantec Live State Recovery images into virtual machines, and offers an enhanced command line interface.

- Adaptec Upgrades Unified Software Platform for Snap Servers
Adaptec Inc., of Milpitas, Calif., has announced a new version of its Linux-based GuardianOS operating system for its Snap Server NAS (network attached storage) solutions.
In addition to offering a simpler user interface, GuardianOS 4.0 provides Unicode support, allowing corporations with data stored in multiple languages easier accessibility and protection.
Other new features include upgraded versions of Computer Associates eTrust anti-virus and BakBones NetVault backup software; graphical RAID representation; Windows to Unix mapping of security, user and group identifiers; improved share creation and share security; improved quota management; and enhanced cross-platform support.

- ADIC Earns SMI-S Certification for Scalar i2000
ADIC (Advanced Digital Information Corp.) of Redmond, Wash., has earned certification under the SMI-S (Storage Management Initiative Specification) by the SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association) for its Scalar i2000 tape library.

- Iomega Debuts New Desktop Hard Drives
Iomega Corp., of San Diego, Calif., has introduced two new desktop hard drives, aimed at different markets.
The 1TB Iomega Desktop Hard Drive XL, which can store up to 4 million photos or 1,500 hours of video, is designed for users who need fast editing speeds.
It comes with four 250GB SATA drives and is configurable as RAID 0 (striped) for maximum throughput.
The package also includes Dantz Retrospect Express software for backup and disaster recovery. Prices start at $899.95.
The Iomega MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive, for the Mac Mini, is a stackable external drive with dual USB 2.0 and FireWire data hubs.
The drive, which is available in 160GB and 250GB capacities, is 6.5 inches square and 2 inches tall. The package also includes Dantz Retrospect backup software. The product starts at $249.95.
