Maxtor Adds SATA Interface to MaXLine, DiamondMax Hard Drives
Maxtor Corp., of Milpitas, Calif., has added a 3GB per second SATA (Serial ATA) interface to its MaXLine III and DiamondMax hard drives. Both hard drives hold up to 300GB with up to a 16MB buffer. Both drives also provide an array of SATA II functions including NCQ (native command queuing), staggered spin up, hot-plug capability and asynchronous signal recovery.
By adding SATA interfaces to its hard drives, the company is preparing them to handle more advanced storage arrays and computers, according to Gary Gentry, Maxtors senior vice president for worldwide marketing.

Seagate Unveils High-Capacity Drives with SATA Interfaces
Seagate Technology, of Scotts Valley, Calif., has introduced the Barracuda 7200.9 family of internal hard drives that provide up to a half-terabyte of capacity with 3GB per second SATA throughput.
The internal drives, intended for applications such as digital video editing and production, CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) and data and image analysis, run at 7,200 RPM and can store up to 160GB on one disc. The drives also offer many NCQ functions.
The drives also offer a 3GB per second SATA interface with NCQ, supporting Intel Hyper-Threading, which can increase the performance of SATA servers and workstations and increase the reliability of heavy workloads, according to the company.

HP Adds Data Protection Capabilities to Smart Office
Hewlett-Packard Co. has expanded the feature set of its Smart Office portfolio, aimed at helping small and midsized businesses more easily adopt technology, with more data protection features.
The portfolio now includes HP StorageWorks Data Protector Express, backup and recovery software for Netware and Linux environments that supports tape, disk and CD/DVD as backup media. The portfolio also offers the new HP StorageWorks MSA 1510i, a SAN (storage area network) with an iSCSI interface designed to help midsize companies implement and manage SANs more easily.

Copan Adds Two New MAID-Based Products
Copan Systems, of Longmont, Colo., has added two products to its portfolio that add to the capabilities in its existing Revolution 200T disk-based storage solution.
Both the Revolution 220T and 220TX are based on Copans MAID (Massive Array of Idle Disks) platform and run on the latest version of the companys Disk Aerobics software. The Revolution 220T offers one to eight shelves ranging from 28 TB to 224 TB, with a maximum throughput of 2.75TB per hour. The Revolution 220TX offers 5.2 TB/hour throughput and comes with five to eight shelves, ranging from 140TB to 224TB of capacity. The 220TX also includes eight Fibre Channel ports.
Disk Aerobics 3.0 software automatically detects potential drive failures and mirrors all data from those drives to spare drives. The software also offers disk scribbing, which identifies and copies data from bad to new sectors on the same drive.

CentrePath Upgrades Magellan Datapath Manager
CentrePath Inc., of Waltham, Mass., has introduced a new version of its real-time event correlation and impact analysis technology.
Magellan DataPath Manager v3 helps users manage their data paths through real-time event correlation, topology management and predictive performance monitoring across networks. Version 3 adds Linux support, additional device support, support for Nortels Optical Metro 3500 and Ciscos MDS 9000 and ONS 15454 series, and more performance management capabilities.

Veritas Cluster Server Adds Support for Replication Solutions
Symantec Corp., of Cupertino, Calif., has added support for a variety of replication solutions to Veritas Cluster Server, a move company executives say will allow customers to more easily maintain data center availability and access data from various data centers.
The clustering and availability software now supports EMC SRDF, EMC MirrorView, Hitachi TruCopy, HP Continuous Access XP, the IBM High-Availability Disaster Recovery capability of DB2 Universal Database and the IBM Peer to Peer Remote Copy capability of IBM Enterprise Storage Server, NetApp SnapMirror, Oracle DataGuard and Veritas Volume Replicator.

Adaptec Adds SATA RAID Controllers
Adaptec Inc., of Milpitas, Calif., has introduced two SATA RAID controllers that support Native Command Queuing and other standard SATA II features. The Serial ATA II RAID 2420SA or 2820SA controllers support array snapshots and offer Dual Drive Failure Protection (RAID 6 on the 2820SA only) to protect against the failure of two drives simultaneously.
Users also can choose several optional features to either product by purchasing a license for Adaptecs Advanced Data Protection Suite. Features include RAID 6 technology (for the 2820SA only), support for Hot Space (RAID 5EE) and Sriped Mirror (RAID 1E), Snapshot Backup and Copyback Hot Spare.
