SunGard, one of the more venerable IT software-and-service companies, announced March 22 that it is expanding its Cisco Systems Unified Computing System (UCS)-based private-cloud computing platform to offer high availability for application delivery and data recovery services in North America.

The new enterprise-level package, administered by SunGard Availability Services, will become available in the United Kingdom and in North America in the second half of 2010.
SunGard is the first service provider to build and launch an enterprise cloud platform using the Vblock infrastructure, a preconfigured cloud architecture/hardware/services package introduced by Cisco in November 2009. EMC provides the storage and security (Clariion arrays, RSA-based security), and its subsidiary, VMware, handles the virtualization layer with vSphere.
Cisco, of course, handles all the networking through its new multipurpose Nexus 1000v network server and its Multilayer Director switches.
SunGard Availability Services has offered a fully managed private-cloud service-without the two new features-in the UK for about a year, formerly called SunGard-as-a-Service.
SunGard, with a lengthy legacy installation base of Fortune 1000 customers, brands the product as its own, provides general services, and adds its own enterprise-level high-availability and data recovery features.
Private cloud computing is a different take on the mainstream version (known as the public cloud) in that smaller, cloudlike IT systems within a firewall offer similar services but to a closed internal network. This network may include corporate or division offices, other companies that are also business partners, raw-material suppliers, resellers, production-chain entities and other organizations intimately connected with a corporate mothership.
