LAS VEGAS—VCE, a highly successful company conceived by EMC, Cisco Systems, Intel and VMware five and half years ago, made news May 4 at EMC World 2015 here by announcing a new line of hyper-converged data center systems called VxRacks.

The company said these new server-storage packages will enable enterprises and service providers to more easily manage the deployment of next-generation scale-out cloud, distributed and mobile Tier 2 applications.

VCE VxRack systems enable users to start with dozens of servers and scale to thousands with up to 38 petabytes of storage capacity while delivering high performance/value per IOP.

Most importantly, VCE offers its proven methodology of pre-engineered, preconfigured factory-built infrastructure with single-call lifecycle support to VxRack Systems, providing owners with the same VCE customer experience.

The new solutions also connect into VCE’s recently announced VCE Vscale Architecture and will be supported by VCE Vision software to achieve a unified data center architecture that spans multiple locations and geographies.

      The new packages include:

–A VxRack with hypervisor options, including VMware vSphere, KVM or bare metal. The system uses EMC ScaleIO software-defined storage, Cisco top-of-rack Nexus switching, and the VMware vRealize management and orchestration suite.

–A VxRack aimed at VMware environments that offers a fully integrated VMware stack based on VMware’s EVO:RACK and VMware Virtual SAN (storage area network).

EMC said VxRack systems offering a flexible choice of hypervisor will be available for order in July and will begin shipping in Q3. More details on the VxRack System based on VMware’s EVO:RACK technology and VMware Virtual SAN will be previewed at VMWorld 2015.

VCE also makes Vblock and VxBlock converged server-storage systems—the two products that put it on the map in the first place. While those focus on running core Tier 1 apps, transactional systems and traditional applications that require a highly resilient and scalable infrastructure, VxRack Systems offer a robust, valuable platform for a variety of new and Tier 2 applications that require scale.

Just as important is VxRack’s integration with VCE’s Vscale unified data center architecture and that it also supports VCE’s Vision Intelligent Operations software, Pund-IT Principal Analyst Charles King wrote in a media advisory.

“In essence, VCE users can rest assured that VxRack systems can be easily incorporated into their existing VCE environments as part of a shared pool of compute resources. As a result, VxRack solutions can also be a valuable addition to customers’ private and hybrid cloud computing efforts and practices,” King said.

EMC World 2015 continues through May 7. More than 40,000 attendees are on site. You can watch keynotes and other events on live stream here.
