Combining size, speed and sound—or lack thereof—IBM is getting ready to ship what it calls the worlds highest-capacity and quietest family of notebook drives.

IBMs Travelstar family includes the Travelstar 48GH, 30GN and 15GN. All use the Armonk, N.Y., companys Drive Noise Suppression System, which allows users to more fully enjoy listening to music and watching videos.

Key among the new drives is the Travelstar 48GH, which at 48GB has the highest capacity of any notebook drive, the company said. It also spins at 5,400 rpm, faster than the 4,200 rpm of most mobile drives.

The 48GHs performance is boosted by its media transfer rates of up to 241M bps, IBM officials said.

Along with the quieter technology, each Travelstar includes glass disk platters, an ATA-100 interface, load/unload technology, giant magneto-resistive recording heads and Enhanced Battery Life Extender 3.0.

IBM plans to ship the hard drives this quarter to leading notebook manufacturers, including Compaq Computer Corp., Dell Computer Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. IBM will also use them in its own notebooks.
