Gateway Inc. is unveiling an upgraded all-in-one desktop computer that includes Intel Corp.s latest chip set and integrated graphics technology.
The Profile 5.5, rolled out Monday, also features a high-bandwidth serial ATA hard drive and up to 2GB of memory.
The Irvine, Calif., company targets the PC at businesses, government offices and schools with little available desktop space, such as small offices and classrooms. Like previous models, the 5.5 offers 15-, 17- and 19-inch screens.
Intels 915G chip set includes support for the chip makers HyperThreading technology for multithreaded applications and an 800MHz front-side bus.
The 5.5 comes standard with a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 processors and a 1MB cache, although it also can be ordered with a lower cost Celeron D chip, according to Gateway officials.
Also offered with the all-in-one is integrated Ethernet support, optional 802.11g wireless capabilities and Client Manager 8.1 management software. It comes with either Microsoft Corp.s Windows XP Pro or XP Home operating systems.
Pricing for the Profile 5.5 starts at less than $1,400.
Gateway officials say they plan to keep the all-in-one system as the company continues to refocus its product lines following the $290 million acquisition of eMachines Inc. in March.
Other vendors also offer all-in-one systems. MPC Computers LLC, of Nampa, Idaho, introduced the ClientPro All-in-One last year. In addition, Pelham Sloane Ltd., of Southgate, Conn., earlier this month rolled out the latest in its line of all-in-one PCs, the PS1500M, which features Intels Pentium M mobile processor. The new computer offers built-in wireless networking capabilities and touch-screen features, and can be placed on a desk or mounted on a wall.
