Hewlett-Packard Co. is growing its utility computing offerings by buying management software vendors Consera Software Inc. and Novadigm Inc.

Officials with HP, of Palo Alto, Calif., said earlier this month that HP will add the software the two companies make to its OpenView software. The goal is to automate most of an IT departments repetitive management tasks, enabling IT administrators to concentrate more on innovation.

The combined technologies of Consera, of Redmond, Wash., and Novadigm, of Mahwah, N.J., bring to HP more automation software to incorporate into the companys Adaptive Enterprise initiative. It will thus let users create a dynamic, flexible IT infrastructure that can more easily respond to the demands of business, according to HP officials.

No financial details of the deals were released.

Novadigm makes Radia and Enterprise Desktop Manager software designed to automate change and configuration management, according to HP. Conseras AgileOne service-modeling software enables users to create an adaptable IT environment.

The two will work well together, with Novadigms products being able to use the models created by Conseras software, HP officials said.

The acquisitions, which HP officials hope will close within three to four months, continue the companys strategy of buying vendors to add to its overall management software product line and to complement ongoing partnerships with companies such as Altiris Inc.

The acquisition of the two companies helps HP fill in two gaps in its Adaptive Enterprise initiative: configuration management and modeling, said Paul Mason, an analyst with IDC, in Framingham, Mass.

In particular, Novadigm gives HP some capabilities in desired state management, in which an IT administrator can impose a configuration setup, and the Novadigm technology ensures that the company keeps that desired state. It also gives HP greater patch management capabilities, Mason said.

“Its a great addition to HPs portfolio,” Mason said. “HPs been integrating [Novadigm technology] with OpenView for some time because HP Services has been reselling it, so theyre familiar with it.”
