Hewlett-Packard Co. on Tuesday unveiled more than three dozen new software and services offerings aimed at ramping its adaptive enterprise strategy.

At the same time, HP officials also announced a partnership with SAP AG and the acquisition of Persist Technologies Inc., an e-mail archiving company based in Pleasanton, Calif.

Speaking at HPs Software Universe conference in Hamburg, Germany, Peter Blackmore, executive vice president of the Enterprise Systems Group, said that management software is the key to HPs initiative. Adaptive enterprise is designed to create a flexible data center where resources quickly can be deployed in response to business demands. About $2.5 billion—or 60 percent of HPs research and development budget—is spent on adaptive enterprise technology, and of that, about 50 percent is spent on management software.

“The measure of business agility is how we respond to change,” Blackmore said. “Management software is the operational playbook that enables business agility.”

To that end, HP unveiled five new software offerings, including HP Systems Insight Manager, which enables IT administrators to manage with a single tool HP ProLiant, Itanium-based Integrity and HP 9000 servers running Windows, Unix or Linux. It also includes plug-ins for other hardware, including printers, client, storage and power management devices. The new offering brings under a single umbrella features from other HP management software, including Insight Manager 7, TopTools and Service Control Manager.

OpenView Management Integration Platform, based in part on technology acquired with the purchase of San Francisco-based Talking Blocks, currently focuses on the management information from Web services and service-oriented environments, but will expand in the future to include other sources. OpenView Select Access is management identity software that enables enterprises to regulate employee access to information across disparate applications and IT services.

OpenView Operations is designed to reduce system downtime by keeping tabs on the health of IT resources, and Web Jetadmin 7.5 enables users to troubleshoot HP and non-HP devices in a networked environment.

In addition to the software, HP also announced new services, including a Global Service Desk with eSupport for desktop, mobile and wireless users that includes a single point of contact and a personalized Web portal, IT Service Management certification for service providers and a service that will have HP become a part of a customers IT department.

The company also rolled out a host of best practices, including for OpenView Service Desk, assessment for service providers and an SAP and HP project to provide application environments that are easily managed.

Nora Denzel, senior vice president of the adaptive enterprise push, said all these aspects are important building blocks in bringing IT and business policies closer together.

“In the future, we dont believe there will be any more IT projects,” Denzel said. “There will be business projects with IT elements to it.”
