Unisys Corp. is bringing Java capabilities to its high-end Windows-based system.
The Blue Bell, Pa., company on Monday unveiled its Java Virtual Machine tuned for its midrange Windows-based ES7000 systems, which can scale up to 32 Intel Corp. processors.
The JVM, which can be downloaded for free, enables enterprises with Java-based applications—many of them being used for front-end Web-based tasks—scattered among numerous smaller servers to be consolidated onto one larger system. This enables the applications to scale up, frees space in data centers and eases server management, said Walt Lapinsky, director of strategic software for Unisys.
Enterprises can also bring these applications onto Wintel servers, rather than having to rely on more expensive Unix systems, Lapinsky said.
“Every enterprise has some applications that have to do with Java,” Lapinsky said, adding that until now, most of those applications were left off any consolidation project Unisys was undertaking.
Unisys, which already offers Java Virtual Machine technology on its high-end mainframe-level ClearPath systems—took the JVM from Sun Microsystems Inc.s Sun Open Net Environment offerings and tuned it to enable it to take advantage of such features as advanced memory and thread management in the ES7000 series, he said.
According to Unisys, the companys JVM is designed to enable Java applications to take advantage of various flavors of Microsoft Corp.s Windows operating system, including Windows Server 2003 Data Center and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, and Windows 2000 Datacenter and Advanced servers.
