Verizon Wireless on Monday will make nationally available the first in a line of downloadable applications based on Qualcomm Inc.s BREW platform.
BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) competes with such technologies as Java2 Micro Edition that enable customers to download applications wirelessly to their mobile phones.
Initial applications include Magic Date Ball from Mattel Inc., which answers yes-or-no questions about love; JAMDAT Bowling from JAMDAT Mobile Inc.; and musical ring tones from Moviso LLC.
Verizon customers with a BREW-capable phone can test applications and select from a variety of per-use or monthly subscription rate options.
Customers must also pay for the airtime charges that accrue while they are selecting and downloading these applications; this can take up to several minutes, depending on the complexity of the application.
BREW services are available initially on the Verizon Wireless Z-800 with full color display and also on the Kyocera 3035e.
