Performance monitoring provider eG Innovations moves to stake a claim as a leader in managing terminal services on Feb. 12, when it plans to introduce the next major release of its eG Enterprise Suite.

Already a self-declared expert in managing Citrix environments, the company will extend its management offerings to Microsoft Windows Terminal Services.

“Terminal services havent had the same amount of attention for performance monitoring. Were taking our Citrix expertise and translating that back to other applications that run on terminal services,” said Srinivas Ramanathan, president and founder of eG Innovations, based in Iselin, N.J.

The agent-based suite, which can act as a general practitioners tool to help pinpoint the infrastructure source of performance problems, provides monitoring, reporting and diagnostics for Microsoft Terminal Services in addition to Citrix servers. The new Version 3.3 also works with mixed Microsoft-Citrix environments.

An agent installed on each managed server collects performance metrics that are aggregated by a central management console. The software automatically baselines performance over time across the different metrics collected by the agents.

The eG Enterprise Suite works across about 80 different applications to show how each performs. It can act as a collaborative tool for different IT silo groups to help speed troubleshooting, according to Ramanathan.

“Once one silo starts to obtain evidence, they can provide information to other silos and ask them to collaborate to find where the problems are,” he said.

Version 3.3 can provide monitoring for multiple tiers of an n-tier application, including front-end Web applications as well as application servers and back-end databases. The software can provide reporting on terminal server activity to show which applications or users are consuming a disproportionate amount of system resources.

The eG Enterprise Suite competes with Citrixs own EdgeSite, acquired with Reflectent Software. It also competes with the Microsoft Operations Manager for Microsoft Terminal Services monitoring, and with ProactiveNet and Compuware for Web applications monitoring.

Citrix officials claimed the eG Enterprise Suite is unique in its ability to forecast potential performance problems before they affect users, thanks to the trend data the tool collects.

The new release is due by the end of February. The software starts at $625 per managed server.
