      PMC-Sierra announces new SAS switching products, Decru and PeakData join forces, NetApp joins Intel alliance, IBM and Sun will offer McDATA Eclipse SAN routing, and nStors storage networking solutions have been certified for PolyServe.

      • PMC-Sierra Adds to maxSAS Storage Family

      PMC Sierra of Santa Clara, Calif., has announced two new SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) switching chips, both members of its maxSAS storage family.

      Both the PM8399 SXP 24x3Gsec and PM8398 SXP 36x3Gsec SAS Expander Switches are intended for use in blade servers.

      Both new switching chips were developed using the SAS zoning specification created by PMC-Sierra and Hewlett-Packard Co., which offer access control partitioning that segments shared network resources into groups, security policies to restrict access between groups, single point configuration and policy management at the expander switch, and backward compatibility with existing SAS controllers, HBAs (host bus adapters) and disk drive arrays.

      • Decru Joins with Distributor to Develop Encrypted Tapes from Mainframe Computer Data

      By combining the capabilities of the DataFort security appliance from Decru Inc. of Redwood City, Calif., with the Fujitsu-Siemens CentricStor Virtual Tape System, Decru and distributor PeakData have developed a solution has that produces high-capacity, encrypted tapes from mainframe computer data.

      The solution will help ensure the security of all data on backup media while providing a way to consolidate backups from open systems and mainframe environments.

      The solution also will provide better security on tapes that are shipped to a variety of destinations, according to Mike Holland, general manager of the CentricStor Business unit for PeakData.

      • NetApp Joins Intel Alliance

      Network Appliance Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., has joined the Intel Enterprise Server Acceleration Alliance, enabling all of its storage products to gain pre-certification to work with Intel-based server configurations.

      Membership in the alliance also provides NetApps channel partners with a way to simplify building, deploying and managing storage solutions, according to Patrick Rogers, vice president of products and partners at NetApp.

      • McDATA Eclipse SAN Routing Available Through IBM, Sun Microsystems

      The Eclipse 1620 SAN Router, a multi-protocol routing and extension device from McDATA Corp. of Broomfield, Colo., will now be available through IBM as part of its TotalStorage SAN m-type family and Sun Microsystems StorEdge solutions.

      • nStor Certified for PolyServe

      With certification testing complete, SATA-based NexStor solutions from nStor Corp. of Carlsbad, Calif., are now fully interoperable with the Matrix Server shared data clustering software from PolyServe of Beaverton, Ore.

      The certification tested the NexStor 4700 SATA (Serial ATA) system with PolyServe software to create a clustered network environment.
