Egenera Inc. and SWsoft Inc. are teaming up to bring greater virtualization capabilities to Egeneras BladeFrame blade server environment.

The two companies on Monday announced a joint marketing, sales and testing alliance in which Egenera, of Marlboro, Mass., will become a member of SWsofts Strategic Technology Partner program. At the same time, SWsoft, of Herndon, Va., will join the Egenera Accelerate alliance program.

Egenera sells high-end “stateless” blade servers—which hold no disks, just a processor and memory—and virtualization software designed to create a utility computing environment. SWsofts Virtuozzo software dynamically partitions a single physical server into multiple virtual machines.

Susan Davis, vice president for product marketing and management at Egenera, said the partnership will give Egenera customers options in server virtualization technology.

“Were really virtualizing the data center,” Davis said. “In terms of virtualizing the processor or server, we rely on partners. [Virtualizing servers] is what SWsoft does.”

Egenera also supports virtualization technology from VMware Inc. and Microsoft Corp. The SWsoft partnership will offer users greater choice, Davis said.

Virtuozzo has been certified on BladeFrame systems for Windows environments and will later include Linux as well, SWsoft officials said.
