Microsoft has launched a preview of the SQL Database Auditing feature for Azure SQL DB. SQL Database Auditing is available on all Azure SQL DB service tiers, including Basic, Standard and Premium plans, explained Tony Petrossian, group program manager of Azure SQL DB.

Audit logs count against an organization’s plan and are written to specified Azure Storage accounts. Petrossian added that one of the benefits that native auditing support brings to Azure-based SQL databases is improved compliance capabilities.

Since April, T-Mobile has been offering customers unlimited talk and text, plus 500MB of data per month for $40 under its Simple Starter plan. Now the company has announced those same customers can quadruple their monthly data quota to 2GB for only $5 more per month.

This is a limited-time promotion and follows another one unveiled last week, when T-Mobile offered free unlimited mobile data for one year to any Simple Choice customer who gets a friend or relative to move to T-Mobile from Sprint, AT&T or Verizon Wireless.

Results from the NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast report show that after seven consecutive quarters of declining shipments, the global notebook PC market improved in the second quarter of 2014. The report found notebook PC shipments reached 45.1 million units.

This is a 1 percent increase over the previous year. The Lenovo Group overtook HP to lead the market with an 18 percent shipment unit share due to strong sales in Europe, China and Latin America.

VMware announced a new partnership with Docker, Google and Pivotal to enable virtualized software container technology in VMware environments.

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger formally announced the news at the VMworld 2014 conference in San Francisco. One of the key value propositions of Docker is that unlike a virtual machine hypervisor like VMware’s ESX, each application does not require its own underlying operating system.
