Pervasive’s New Database Engine Hits the Streets

Pervasive Software is looking for a bigger share of the embedded database market with the release of Pervasive PSQL Summit 10, the next generation of the companys database engine.

Released Sept. 18, the new version is designed to help ISVs, VARs and OEMs embrace new technologies, such as Microsoft Windows Vista, and to take advantage of the latest in 64-bit technology for accelerated database performance. Version 10 includes compatibility for applications built on previous releases of PSQL to run on Vista, and lays a foundation for a future update that will support the next Microsoft server operating system, Windows Server 2008, said Pervasive officials.

“Microsoft Vista and Longhorn [Window Server 2008] share a common core architecture-for example, security components,” said Gilbert Van Cutsem, general manager of database products for Pervasive, in Austin, Texas. “Pervasive PSQL v10 builds on and leverages this new Microsoft architecture, as part of Pervasives participation in the Microsoft Early Access Program, thus allowing us to plan release of a Windows Server 2008-compliant and certified version of v10 shortly after the expected delivery of Windows Server 2008 next year.”

In addition, PSQL 10 also features expanded SQL syntax for richer extensions for columns, views, names and stored procedures as well as a caching manager for high-performance throughput that accelerates the input and output of database files.

“Historically, our ISVs are typically relatively slow adopters of new technology,” Van Cutsem said. “Pervasive PSQL Summit v10 allows them to embrace change and move ahead whenever they are ready and to respond as their SMB [small and midsize business] customer base continues adoption … We put the database in their applications ahead of the curve, so to speak.”

Noel Yuhanna, an analyst with Forrester Research, said the latest release of Pervasive PSQL continues the companys tradition of rolling out innovative and customer-driven features to maintain an edge over competitors in the embedded database market.

“The focus of PSQL v10 on performance with 64-bit support and Xtreme I/O ensures higher performance and transaction throughput for all types of applications,” Yuhanna said. “As a trend, we are seeing that more and more customers, especially in the SMB space, are looking at applications that use embedded databases, since it lets the application control the database [and] therefore requires little or no database administration.”

Other enhancements in PSQL v10 related to the expanded support for SQL and integration with InstallShield raise the bar for developer productivity and allow Pervasive to maintain its position as a leader in the embedded database market, Yuhanna said.

The new database engine is available for download on a trial basis.
