Collaboration via the Web offers a lot of promise—and many obstacles. Arbortext Inc. said it hopes to help businesses clear some of those hurdles.

Enhanced features on the Ann Arbor, Mich., companys Epic Editor 4.2 include change tracking, which enables groups of authors to track text and mark up changes made to a document, and in-line editing of compound documents, enabling authors to edit document components directly within the same window instead of separate windows.

It also increases the products support of XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language) by offering XSL Transformations and XSL-Formatting Objects. The former enables online publishing, the latter, print publishing.

Other features include format conversion; a mapping function that officials said reduces development time by 75 percent; and new support for JavaScript, which, combined with support for Java, C and C++, and Component Object Model—and enhanced support for the World Wide Web Consortiums Document Object Model API—enables developers to create in different languages.

Epic Editor 4.2 is available now; Arbortext users are eligible for a free upgrade.
