BEA Timeline

BEA is founded by Bill Coleman, Ed Scott and Alfred Chuang–all of whom left Sun Microsystems to start the company by acquiring Information Management and Independence Technologies. The latter company resold the Tuxedo online transaction processing system, which was owned by Novell and originally developed by AT&T. Coleman, Scott and Chuang lent their first names to create the BEA moniker.

BEA acquires the rights to Tuxedo from Novell.

The company acquires Object Broker from Digital Equipment.

The company acquires the rights to NCR-

With the acquisition of WebLogic, BEA leads the move into the commercialization of application servers.

Alfred Chuang becomes CEO after Coleman and Scott exit.

BEA acquires Crossgain, which brought former distinguished Borland and Microsoft engineer Adam Bosworth into the BEA fold. Bosworth would leave BEA to join Google in 2004.

With the launch of AquaLogic, BEA becomes one of the first vendors to commercialize Web services and SOA (service-oriented architecture).

BEA acquires Plumtree Software, makers of corporate portal software.

BEA acquires Fuego, provider of business process management software.

The company acquires Flashline, builder of metadata repository.

BEA is acquired, by rival Oracle.
