London-based Barablu has developed a free calling system that works with some Nokia phones that use the Symbian operating system.
The product works with Nokia Series 60 phones on either Wi-Fi or GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks, and supports voice calling in addition to instant messaging and video. The company says the new software works with Nokia E and N series phones.
Software for these phones and for some Windows Mobile devices that also support the Barablu software can be downloaded for free from the companys Web site.
Unlike other free or low-cost VOIP (voice over IP) services, Barablu lets GSM mobile phones and Wi-Fi phones interoperate. The company says that this is the first such cross-platform operation.
The free service is only between phones that are running Barablus software. Calls outside the network have charges associated. The company says those charges are comparable with Skypes fees. Barablu already has free calling for PCs using VOIP.
