Lucent Technologies Inc. on Wednesday announced plans to help wireless carriers bridge wireless LAN and wide area network data services for the enterprise.
The Murray Hill, N.J., company is teaming up with several others, including Hewlett Packard Co. and Sierra Wireless Inc. to develop and sell Lucents Secure Mobile Data Solutions for Enterprises, officials said.
The idea is that enterprise customers will have remote access to corporate data behind the firewall via any cellular network as well as from corporate WLANs or public wireless LAN “hot spots.”
The initial solution, available immediately for notebook computers with a Sierra Wireless modem, enables virtual private network (VPN) connections over third generation CDMA2000 1X networks. Support for personal digital assistants (PDAs) is forthcoming, officials said.
The second solution, available later this year, will support high-speed data access to corporate applications via both wireless LANs and 3G CDMA2000 networks over IP (Internet Protocol).
Lucent also plans to enable seamless handoffs between 802.11 and 3G, officials said.
