Lucent to Combine Wire-Line, Mobile Units

Lucent Technologies last week announced that it is combining the mobile and wire-line equipment businesses into one group. The announcement coincided with a quarterly earnings report that indicated strong wireless sales have been compensating for a slowing demand on the wire-line side.

Cindy Christy, formerly president of the Mobility Solutions business, will lead the combined business unit, which will be called the Network Solutions Group. Officials said the convergence will result in job cuts but did not say how many.

The services business will remain separate.
