Gateway Inc. on Monday is rolling out upgraded servers armed with Intel Corp.s new 3.06GHz Xeon processors and targeted at the small and midsized business space.

The 960 and 980 server lines will now feature the chip that includes Intels hyperthreading technology and a 533MHz front-side bus, according to Gateway, of Poway, Calif.

Intel, of Santa Clara, Calif., on Monday released the 3.06GHz Xeon for dual-processor workstations and servers. The chip maker also released a 3GHz version of the Xeon chip that features a 400MHz front-side bus. The new chips come with 512KB of Level 2 cache.

Intels fastest Xeon chip until now clocked in at 2.8GHz. Gateways 960 and 980 lines previously had used the 2.4GHz chip as their fastest processor.

The new Gateway servers also will include Intels E7501 chip set, dual-channel DDR 266 memory, PCI-X technology and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.

The hyperthreading technology allows a single processor to work like two virtual chips.

The Gateway 960 server, aimed at workgroup and smaller businesses, starts at $2,199. The 980, with a starting price of $3,099, is targeted at departments and midsized companies.
