Gateway Inc. is refreshing its line of two-way servers, consolidating four systems into three and making the new servers more scalable.
The Irvine, Calif., company this week is rolling out the Gateway 9510 Series tower server—which will replace the 960 and 980 systems—and two new rack-mount systems, the 1U (1.75-inch) 9315 and 2U (3.5-inch) 9515.
The servers support the latest processor technology from Intel Corp., including EM64T, which enables the systems to run both 32- and 64-bit applications. They also support Intels E7520 and E7320 chip sets, as well as an 800MHz front-side bus, Hyper-Threading technology, PCI Express and faster DDR2 memory.
The 9510 was able to replace two other towers because of its flexibility, including up to 10 hot-swap drive bays—up to six SATA (Serial ATA) drives or 10 SCSI drives—as well as redundant power supplies and fans, said Tim Diefenthaler, senior director of product marketing at Gateway.
“The focus of the Gateway family of servers is to provide value and performance,” he said. “Were not going into the enterprise-grade class [of servers]. We go up to a four-way, and thats where its going to stay. We want to focus on the volume space of the Intel market.”
The systems also are designed with such features as cable management, toolless access and a 12- to 18-month life cycle.
For the rack servers, the 9315 and 9515 replace the two-way 955 and 975 systems. The option of SATA drives in the 9315 also makes it an attractive system for high-performance computing needs, a space that Gateway traditionally has not participated in, Diefenthaler said. It also is Gateways first sub-$1,000 rack system, priced at $999, he said.
All are available immediately. The 9515 starts at $1,499, and the 9510 at $1,199.
