Hewlett-Packard is rolling out a RISC-based workstation with boosted performance, officials said, but it costs about half the price of the current model.

Key to the Workstation c8000, released last week, is the use of HPs new PA-8800 processor at 900MHz or 1GHz, a dual-core chip that enables the two-way system to perform like a four-way workstation, officials said. The chip can run the companys Unix-based HP-UX 10.20, 11 and 11i applications and is binary-compatible with the 8700+ chip.

The workstation, with pricing starting at $9,312, has the same chip set used in the companys Itanium-based systems, a key step on the migration path toward HPs standardization on Intels 64-bit Itanium processor.
