Riverbed Technology is bringing Windows 7 and 64-bit systems capabilities to its WAN optimization appliance for mobile users.

Riverbed’s enhanced Steelhead Mobile 3.0 appliance, announced Nov. 2, also offers accelerated performance to mobile employees and branch office users who want to share data.

Accelerated performance of IT infrastructure is going to be increasingly critical as businesses adopt such models as cloud computing, according to Eric Wolford, senior vice president of marketing and business development at Riverbed.

“As companies focus on consolidating their data through private cloud initiatives, the distance between their employees and critical data is growing,” Wolford said in a statement. “Employees are becoming more mobile, working from a variety of locations outside the office. This means that as centralization of data and IT infrastructure continues, remote access is becoming more of a challenge.”

Among the enhancements in Steelhead 3.0 are acceleration of Windows 7 and 64-bt systems for mobile users. In addition, Web applications will run up to 60 times faster through such features as URL learning, page parsing and embedded object prefetching, according to Riverbed officials.

Riverbed also is bringing a feature called branch warming to its appliance, enabling Steelhead Mobile users to share optimized data with branch office employees using Riverbed’s Steelhead appliance.

Steelhead Mobile 3.0 will be generally available in December.
