Apple is giving its smartwatch far more health data to work with.
Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 on Sept. 9 with a Health Sensing System that measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day and heart-rate variability as often as every five minutes. A redesigned Health app arriving later in 2026 will use Apple Intelligence to surface personalized insights from longer-term health data.
Apple is pairing denser biometric collection with software that can also draw from clinical records, third-party devices, and lab results. The strategy extends Apple’s push to spread AI across its hardware ecosystem beyond standalone assistant features.
Apple Watch collects more health data throughout the day
Both watches combine Apple’s S11 chip with redesigned optical and electrical heart sensors. In its Series 12 announcement, Apple says heart rate is measured every five seconds throughout the day, while HRV can be sampled up to 24 times more frequently than on Series 11.
Readiness analyzes recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score to produce a daily 0-to-10 score. It can change as new information arrives, including after an intense workout or a shift in daytime vitals. Apple classifies Vitals as a wellness feature rather than a medical tool.
Apple’s heart-rate accuracy study included more than 1,000 participants and used a Polar H10 ECG chest strap as its reference. Series 12 was compared with current devices from Garmin, Google, Huawei, Samsung, Whoop, and Oura across workouts and everyday activities.
Apple reported the highest overall heart-rate accuracy among the devices tested. The result remains company-backed evidence rather than independent validation: Apple published the research and managed some study sites, while a contract research organization operated others.
Apple Intelligence expands the health-data layer
Apple’s health platform announcement describes a redesigned Health app that can combine information from Apple Watch, iPhone, and AirPods with clinical records and third-party apps and devices. Users can also add lab values including A1c and LDL cholesterol.
The redesigned app arrives later in 2026, starting in US English. US users will also be able to purchase a $119 Quest Diagnostics package covering more than 50 biomarkers at approximately 2,000 locations through the Health app.
Rivals are pursuing similar goals through different architectures. Samsung researchers have demonstrated health AI running on smartwatch-class hardware, although the company has not announced that research model as a consumer Galaxy Watch feature. Samsung’s latest watches also show how software compatibility can narrow the hardware upgrade case when health features extend to earlier devices.

Apple’s clearest technical change is the density of data feeding its software. Series 12 and Ultra 4 collect background heart-rate readings every five seconds, while HRV can be sampled every five minutes — up to 24 times more frequently than Series 11.
The redesigned Health app broadens the other side of that equation by combining wearable telemetry with clinical, third-party, and laboratory data. Apple Intelligence gains a larger and more varied input set without Apple recasting Readiness or Vitals as diagnostic products.
Organizations evaluating digital-health integrations or workplace wellness platforms still have to separate richer telemetry from clinical validation. Governance, interoperability, regional availability, device compatibility, and the boundary between wellness guidance and medical claims remain deployment considerations even as the underlying data becomes more detailed.
