Anthropic said Opus 5 performs particularly well on software engineering tasks. On Frontier-Bench v0.1, the company reported that Opus 5 surpassed the other models it evaluated. On CursorBench 3.2, Opus 5 at maximum effort came within 0.5% of the peak score of Anthropic’s higher-tier Fable 5 while costing half as much per task.
Anthropic reported those benchmark results itself, so they shouldn’t be treated as an independent head-to-head win over DeepSeek. Still, they give developers a clearer picture of the workloads Anthropic has optimized for: software engineering tasks that require more persistence than generating a function or fixing a syntax error.
DeepSeek V4-Pro takes a slightly different route. Its documentation shows support for thinking and non-thinking modes, JSON output, tool calls, the Responses API, chat prefix completion, and fill-in-the-middle completion in non-thinking mode.
For developers, that feature set gives V4-Pro plenty of room to handle code generation and coding-agent workflows even though there isn’t a directly comparable benchmark between the two models.

Anthropic describes Opus 5 as an agentic coding model designed for long-running, multi-step work. The company says it can keep track of complex tasks across a codebase, work through feature development, and handle bug-fixing jobs while maintaining the thread of the task.
Anthropic has also added API features around that style of development. Developers can change which tools Claude can access during a conversation without invalidating the prompt cache. Automatic fallbacks can also send certain flagged API requests to another available model rather than simply stopping the request.
DeepSeek V4-Pro supports the building blocks developers need for agents, including tool calls and the Responses API. DeepSeek also offers both OpenAI-format and Anthropic-format endpoints, which can make it easier to test V4-Pro inside an existing agent stack.
Our verdict: Claude Opus 5 is the better fit for long-running coding agents. DeepSeek has the necessary agent features, but Anthropic has made sustained, multi-step software work a more prominent part of Opus 5’s design.
Context and output limits
Developers working with large repositories will find surprisingly little separating the two models on context capacity.
DeepSeek V4-Pro supports a 1 million-token context window and a maximum output of 384K tokens. It also supports both thinking and non-thinking modes across that model.
Claude Opus 5 also gets a 1 million-token context window. Anthropic’s documentation says Claude 4.6 and later models receive the full 1M context window at standard pricing, with prompt caching and batch-processing discounts available across the full window.
A large context window can help when a developer needs to feed a model extensive source files, repository documentation, logs, or a long agent history. It is worth separating capacity from performance, though. A 1M-token window tells you how much information the model can accept, not how accurately it will reason across every part of that information.
DeepSeek lists a maximum output of 384K tokens. Anthropic’s supplied documentation does not provide a comparable output limit for Claude Opus 5, so we can’t compare the two directly on that metric.
Our verdict: It’s a tie on context size, while DeepSeek has the advantage when it comes to documented maximum output.
API pricing: DeepSeek V4-Pro vs. Claude Opus 5
Price is where DeepSeek and Claude stop looking like close competitors.
DeepSeek currently lists V4-Pro at $0.435 per million uncached input tokens and $0.87 per million output tokens. Starting Aug. 16, the company will move V4-Pro to peak and off-peak pricing. Off-peak rates will be $0.66 for input and $1.98 for output per million tokens, while peak rates rise to $1.32 and $3.96, respectively.
Claude Opus 5 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens at standard API rates. Anthropic also provides prompt caching and batch-processing discounts. Fast mode runs Opus 5 at around 2.5 times the default speed, but it costs twice the model’s base price.
For high-volume applications, that difference can quickly outweigh smaller feature differences.
For a developer making a handful of requests, those differences may not change much. The calculation looks different for a coding platform or agent application processing millions of tokens every day. At that scale, model pricing becomes part of the product’s operating cost rather than a minor API expense.
Even after DeepSeek’s Aug. 16 price change, its listed peak rates remain well below Claude Opus 5’s standard rates.
Our verdict: DeepSeek V4-Pro wins comfortably on price. Claude’s premium may be easier to justify for teams that specifically need its agentic coding strengths, but DeepSeek is far easier on the API budget.
