Ford is giving its AI assistant something a generic chatbot does not have: information about the car you are actually driving.
The automaker’s new AI assistant works through its Ford and Lincoln mobile apps and can explain features, offer troubleshooting help and pull information about the customer’s vehicle’s current status, including fuel or charge levels, tire pressure and oil life.
Ford says the rollout started during the first half of 2026 and is now expanding across eligible vehicle lines, with the company targeting approximately 8 million customers across eligible Ford and Lincoln nameplates.
AI assistant connects to drivers’ specific vehicles
One of the key differences between Ford’s assistant and a typical AI chatbot is the vehicle-specific information it can access.
Ford’s assistant is designed to use information associated with the customer’s particular vehicle. This means drivers don’t have to start every conversation by explaining their vehicle's specifications before getting to their questions.
The assistant can also provide troubleshooting instructions for certain problems. Ford gives the example of a window that keeps bouncing back up, with the AI providing step-by-step instructions for addressing the problem.
Customers are also able to upload an image when asking a question, giving the assistant another way to understand what they are trying to troubleshoot or identify.
Real-time vehicle data adds another layer
The assistant is not limited to static information from an owner’s manual. Ford says it can also access vehicle-status data available through the app, including fuel or battery charge level, tire pressure and oil life.
That changes the type of answer the assistant can provide. Instead of only explaining how a vehicle is designed to work, it can respond using information associated with the customer’s actual vehicle at that moment.
Ford says eligible users will see a blue oval and spark icon in the upper-right corner of the vehicle home screen as the feature becomes available.
Ford plans in-vehicle AI for 2027
The app is also part of a larger AI strategy to bring AI directly into Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Ford plans to bring its own AI assistant into select vehicles in 2027, extending the technology from the owner’s smartphone into the dashboard.
In the meantime, Ford is also upgrading voice capabilities in vehicles equipped with its latest Ford and Lincoln Digital Experience. Google Gemini is being offered as an opt-in alternative to Google Assistant, giving drivers a more conversational way to handle tasks such as navigation, sending texts, adjusting the cabin temperature and controlling entertainment.
For now, Ford describes Gemini and its own AI assistant as complementary technologies. Gemini takes care of general in-vehicle tasks, while Ford’s assistant focuses on vehicle-specific questions. The company says its future embedded assistant will combine the same foundation with Ford data and services to create a more customized experience for individual vehicles.
Automakers race to add AI
Ford isn’t the only automaker looking to incorporate AI into the ownership and driving experience.
Rivian and Mercedes-Benz have rolled out their own voice assistants, while BMW is incorporating Amazon Alexa technology and General Motors is turning to Google Gemini. Vehicles using Google’s built-in operating system, including models from Volvo and Polestar, are also gaining access to Gemini.
Ford first announced plans for its AI assistant earlier this year alongside plans for a future Level 3 “eyes-off” driver-assistance system. The mobile-app rollout gives Ford a way to test vehicle-aware AI with millions of existing customers before the technology moves directly into dashboards.
The bigger test will be whether access to vehicle-specific data turns AI from another voice interface into something drivers genuinely rely on for ownership, maintenance and everyday questions.
