Candle Corp. is offering specific versions of its Omegamon Extended Edition (XE) System performance monitoring and reporting tools with the release of its IBM WebSphere tool.

The Omegamon XE for WebSphere Application Server, released on Monday, is designed to help application developers and operations managers test WebSphere applications performance during implementation and deployment.

Candle will take on established players such as Tivoli and BMC Software as well as fast growing startups like Dirig, in WebSphere application server monitoring.

Candle user Dan Newkirk, who uses Omegamon primarily to monitor IBM mainframe applications, welcomed the new WebSphere tool, though his firm already uses the Tivoli WebSphere monitoring tool.

“Were trying to improve our monitoring of our Web sites, but were just getting rolling on that,” said Newkirk, systems consultant at Farmers Insurance Group in Los Angeles, Calif.

The new Omegamon XE WebSphere monitor can watch up to 300 server attributes, ranging from servlets and Java Server Pages to Enterprise Java Beans, according to Candle officials in Los Angeles.

“We provide statistics on those in graphical reports, or the user can define how they want to view data,” said Paul Spicer, senior director, critical services management at Candle. Users can choose to display statistics such as memory usage, EJB response times or application threads in pie charts, graphs or other visual elements.

The new Omegamon XE tool is available now and can manage WebSphere servers on Windows NT, IBM AIX and Solaris. It will be available on IBM OS/390 in the first quarter of next year.

The software is priced starting at $3,000 per processor. An average configuration will be about $17,000 for the distributed version, and $129,000 for OS/390.
