PC maker Dell Computer Corp., which already is looking to expand its offerings into such areas as printers and personal digital assistants, is getting into the retail cash register business.
At the National Retail Federations Convention and Expo in New York on Monday, Dell announced it is combining its various server, PC, storage and networking products with peripherals and software from companies such as Retek Inc., AutoGas Inc., GERS Inc. and MSS Global Inc. to automate such processes as sales transactions, inventory management and accounting.
The Round Rock, Texas, company said a typical point-of-sale configuration will include its Optiplex desktop combined with a flat-panel touch screen, bar code scanner, thermal receipt printer and cash drawer. Pricing starts at $1,794.
Dell officials said the company already has signed up The Wet Seal Inc., a clothing store in Foothill Ranch, Calif., which is using 1,100 systems in its 588 stores nationwide.
