Broadcom and Network Appliance forge alliances to further storage technology, while String Bean Software introduces an improved iSCSI SAN solution, Lasso unveils a CDP solution, and a new company is formed to help SMBs protect data.
- String Bean Software Furthers iSCSI SAN Solution
The newest version of WinTarget, a software-based iSCSI SAN (Storage Area Network) solution from String Bean Software Inc. of Montgomery Village, Md., offers a host of new services.
WinTarget 2.0 offers centralized management and the Microsoft Corp. VDS (Virtual Disk Services) architecture to help reduce complexity and operating costs, something Microsoft has indicated will help SMBs (small and midsize businesses) adopt SANs.
The newest version of WinTarget also uses the Windows Server 2003 X64 operating system and Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Version 2.0, and uses an iSCSI SAN Book to deploy disaster recovery solutions that allow organizations to perform bare-metal recovery of critical applications from iSCSI storage.
- New Data Protection Company for SMBs Formed
SafeData LLC, a new company that will be based in Warwick, R.I., will focus on helping SMBs protect, recover and restore data more quickly and at lower cost.
The company will address what CEO Peter Briggs said are two failings with existing high availability and disaster recovery solutions for SMBs—high expense and slow recovery times.
The company will offer real-time backup services, with the goal being 24-7 access to mission-critical systems.
The companys main product suite will include SafeData/HA, an outsourced high availability solution that guarantees recovery in two hours or less; SafeData/DR, a middleware solution providing point-in-time capture of changed data through the Internet; and SafeData/HS, a hot site guaranteeing recovery in 48 hours or less.
- Arkivio, NetApp Combine Capabilities to Improve ILM Offering
The Arkivio Inc. Auto-Stor ILM (Information Lifecycle Management) software is now integrated with Network Appliance Inc.s Data ONTAP software via NetApps open APIs (Application Programming Interfaces).
By combining Arkivio Auto-Stor ILM, a classification system that helps users create processes and policies around different data types, user groups and storage types, with NetApp open APIs, Data ONTAP users can transparently access archived data, while the data can be automatically returned to a primary NetApp storage solution.
The combination of technologies can manage up to about 1 billion files from a single Web-based console, according to company executives.
- Lasso Introduces CDP Solution
Lasso Logic of San Francisco has introduced a CDP (continuous data protection) appliance aimed at the SMB market.
The disk-based Lasso CDP solution offers real-time data replication, replicating only the block-level differences in each file.
Lasso CDP also has open file and open database backup capabilities, allowing users to access files while they are being backed up.
Other features include local and off-site backup, instant recovery, central and remote administration, file sharing and remote access, and support for a large variety of business applications.
- Broadcom Acquires Siliquent Technologies
Broadcom Corp., a broadband communications semiconductor company based in Irvine, Calif., has agreed to acquire Siliquent Technologies Inc. of Mountain View, Calif., a fabless semiconductor company and developer of 10 Gigabit Ethernet NICs (network interface controllers) that aim to improve server performance.
By acquiring Siliquent, Broadcom expects to be able to more quickly deliver 10G Ethernet C-NICs (converged-NICs) for server LAN-on-motherboard applications. And because blade servers are expected to be one of the early adopters of 10G Ethernet C-NIC technology, Broadcom expects to be well-positioned to deliver TCP/IP offload, iSCSI and RDMA capabilities on a single-chip, 10G Ethernet controller, according to Greg Yount, vice president of Broadcoms high-speed controller line of business.
