Midmarket storage software maker STORServer said July 25 that it is now providing licenses to back up VMware virtual environment data alongside standard data stores.

STORServer Virtual Machine Backup provides the VM backup using a new interface that the company claims is intuitive enough for line-of-business employees to deploy effectively.

STORServer, which uses IBM’s Tivoli Storage Manager serving as a controller, also has simplified its licensing.

The Colorado Springs, Colo.-based company’s capacity licensing approach consists of a bundle of Tivoli Storage Manager and STORServer software products and services that use a per-terabyte metric.

Users can install as many individual products as needed for their environment; license charges are calculated only by the amount of storage backed up or archived, rather than the number of machines or applications licensed.

There is no expense for per-server, per-installation or processor value units; users are only charged for the terabyte of capacity that is stored in TSM primary storage pools and FastBack repositories, STORServer said.

Key features that STORServer claims in its software include: massive scalability with broad platform support; target-side and source-side data deduplication; and advanced support for virtual environment protection and management.

They also include online, consistent and centralized data protection for databases, mySAP/SAP R3 environments, Email servers running IBM Lotus Domino or Microsoft Exchange, item-level recovery of Microsoft Exchange email objects, LAN-free backup and restore operations, file-system and application-aware snapshots and continuous data protection, and bare-metal machine recovery for Windows or Linux servers that are already protected with STORServer’s Instant Restore appliance.
