SAN FRANCISCO—Sun has changed the naming scheme for the Java platform, saying the new changes in the standard edition warrant the upgrade.
Instead of J2SE (Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition) 1.5, which has also been code-named Tiger, the platform will now be known as J2SE 5.0 to reflect the number of changes since the last version, said Joe Keller, vice president of Java Web services at Sun.
Sun will officially launch J2SE 5.0 at JavaOne here Monday. The technology is said to greatly simplify Java development over previous versions.

Likewise, the upcoming J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) 1.5, which will be based on J2SE 5.0, has been renamed to J2EE 5.0. Sun will offer sneak peaks of the technology at the show.
Sun also will promote the new Enterprise JavaBeans specification, EJB 3.0, which greatly simplifies the development of enterprise Java applications, the company said.
In addition, J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro edition) will also reflect the name change.
